  • painted and gilt wood
  • 261cm. high, 41cm. wide, 22cm. deep; 8ft. 6¾in. 1ft 4¼in, 8¾in.
each with a composite corinthian capital centred by a later eight-point star motif, the stem decorated with crenellated bands alternating with star motifs representing the heraldic symbols of the Aldobrandini Family, on later square plinths; decoration partially refreshed

Provenance

Sold as lot 276, from the Collection of Cyril Humphries, in these rooms, 28th October 2004. 

Condition

Minor chips to corinthian capitals, notably to acanthus and stars. Evidence of old very minor worm damage which appears to be no longer active. Minor areas of white gesso visible where painted surface has flaked. Filler in areas of colums. In overall good conserved condition.

Catalogue Note

The Aldobrandini family was a celebrated Florentine noble family recorded since the 14th century and one Pope was appointed from the family: Ippolito Aldobrandini, who was Pope from 1592-1605 known as Clement VIII. The family could also count six cardinals amongst their number including Jacopo, appointed Bishop of Troy and Alessandro, Archbishop of Rodi.
