Description

  • Walnut, brass
  • 255cm. 8ft. 4½in. high
13-inch dial with mask and scroll spandrels, 2 x twelve hour chapter ring with open centre displaying a gilded sun mask indicating the time of sunrise and sunset, shutters lacking, the arch with a seconds dial flanked by dolphin spandrels, the substantial bell striking movement with eight knopped pillars and shouldered plates, the escapement remotely mounted at the top, five wheel trains, a rod and pinion leading to the calendar dial below signed John Ellicott, London,  indicating the Gregorian and Julien calendars and equation of time, the case of good colour with broken-arch top and moulded cornice above a foliate fret, brass-capped stop-fluted hood pillars, the trunk and plinth with brass mouldings and inlaid with chevron banding, the sides crossbanded

Condition

Dial in good condition but might benefit from a clean, beautiful hands, painted centre in poor and flaking condition. Movement is very dirty but retains the original wheelwork, shutters and their connection from the calendar lacking. Calendar in good condition. Case is very dry throughout with old cracks, lifting, repairs and losses, right side upper trunk moulding detached, cresting detached, lacking central finial block. With 2 brass-cased weights and pendulum bob with rating nut (lacking rod and suspension) but no winder or case keys.
