Catalogue Note
Joseph Nigg (1782-1863) is considered to be the most accomplished flower painter ever employed by the Viennese manufactory, where he was active between 1799 and 1848, becoming head of the flower painting department in 1816. Recognised for his depictions of arrangements of flowers and fruit, often in vases perched on a marble slab, Nigg was following a tradition practiced at Meissen, Fürstenberg, and other European porcelain factories.Whilst generally known for his plaques, Nigg also painted on vases and other forms at the Vienna factory.
