Catalogue Note

The painting as well as another clock of this model are illustrated H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol I., p. 370, figs. 5.13.13 and 5.13.15. The base of the clock illustrates the tragic outcome as Hippolytus is killed by a sea monster while riding his chariot at his father's instigation.

Other examples are in the British Embassy, Paris (Tardy, French Clocks the World Over, Paris, 1981, p. 271), The Palazzo Pitti, Florence and the Ruspoli-Talleyrand Collection, Florence (signed Galle).
