colorfully painted around the exterior with a continuous scene of three carriages making their way through villages and countryside along the 'road to London', the center of the interior inscribed I.J.E. PEPPERDAY above the arms of the Taylor's guild and the motto One more Bowl and then beneath sawtooth and chain borders on the rim suspending flower swags.
Provenance
Sold, Christie's, London, February 13, 1978, lot 72
Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, London
Sold, Sotheby's, New York, October 23, 1998, lot 14
Literature
Griselda Lewis, A Collector's History of English Pottery, London, 1985, p. 135, where the author suggests that the piece is an electioneering bowl, depicting an MP (presumably I.J.E. Pepperday) approaching London.
Condition
There is a long restored crack running from rim to rim across the base and it is likely that the bowl was broken in two pieces at some point. The restoration is well done.

Catalogue Note
The style of decoration of the present example, particularly the treatment of the borders, is typical of that appearing on Chinese Export porcelain bowls of the period. Examples of Export bowls with similar, although less naively painted, continuous exterior landscape decoration and interior borders are illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Oriental Export Market Porcelain, pp. 237-8, pls. 158 and 159.
