Catalogue Note

The Medici family ruled in Florence from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century.  The 'Medici' vase was first recorded at the Villa Medici in Rome in the late sixteenth century and is now in the Uffizi in Florence.  The vase achieved widespread fame through the publication of engravings such as those made by Piranesi and published in Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi, 1778.  Regularly regarded as being one of the greatest surviving examples of classical, the vase is attributed by some early writers to Phidias.
