Catalogue Note

Lister Witherspoon was born in Lawrenceburg, KY on 7 June 1848, the son of Dr. Lewis Johnson Witherspoon, a pioneer of Kentucky.  In 1869, Witherspoon graduated from Georgetown College, and in December of that year he married Martinette Viley, daughter of Warren and Catherine Jane (Martin) Viley of Woodford Conty, KY.  The Witherspoon family lived in Woodford County for many years, where they maintained a stately home on a 350-acre horse breeding farm.
