Catalogue Note
Commonly referred to as the tomato or pumpkin vine salad bowl, this model was first introduced in 1940, and was featured in Tiffany's display in the House of Jewels pavilion at the New York World's Fair (1939-40). The bowl was designed to accompany a pair of parcel-gilt salad servers, which were designed three years earlier by Norwegian staff designer Olaf Wilford (1894-1980). This well-liked pattern was produced in limited numbers until the early 1950's, and is illustrated in Jewel Stern's Modernism in American Silver, p. 177 fig. 8.15 and 8.16. Another bowl of this model, also with matching servers, was sold in these rooms on 22 January 2010, lot 316.
