Provenance
The engraved initials P/S*E are those of Samuel Phillips, Sr. (1715-1790) and his wife Elizabeth Barnard (1718-1789), of Andover, MA. The couple married on 11 July 1738. Their son Samuel Phillips, Jr. (1743-1802), later Lt. Governor, founded Phillips Academy, Andover, MA.
See lot 176 for a teapot by Hurd engraved with the Foxcroft arms and initial P almost certainly for Phoebe Foxcroft, wife of Samuel Phillips, Jr. who married 12 July 1773.
