Catalogue Note
The inscription reads: "CORINTHIAN YACHT CLUB OF NEW YORK FOURTH ANNUAL SWEEPSTAKES, NEWPORT, R.I. AUGUST 22, 1892(?) "WASP" "HARPOON" "GLORIANA" FIRST PLACE."
Wasp was a new forty-six foot sloop designed by Nathanael Herresof for Archibald Rogers. Harpoon was designed by Edward Burgess and was sailed by the Adams brothers. Goloriana was also designed by Nathanael Herresof and was a spoon-bowed sloop of light composite construction. After winning all of the eight races entered in 1891 she was retired for the season to allow others a chance. Wasp was similar to Gloriana, but was the first yacht with a fully-developed lead bulb keel.
