The presentation inscription reads: "To Arpad G. Gerster, M.D. In grateful recognition of the care and skill to which I am beholden for relief from a malady of many years. April 4th 1896. Roger A. Pryor."

Dr. Arpad Geyza Gerster (1848-1923) was a Hungarian-born surgeon and diagnostician who practiced in New York City.  During Gerster's illustrious career he practiced and taught medicine at some of New York's most prestigious hospitals including Lennox Hill Hospital, Mount Sinai, New York Polyclinic and the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University.  In 1888 Dr. Gerster published the first textbook on aseptic and antiseptic surgery, and was also a pioneer in the field of treating epilepsy by means of surgery.
