- A Rare "Geometric and Turtleback Tile" Chandelier
impressed TIFFANYSTUDIOS/NEW YORK
leaded glass and patinated bronze
Provenance
Phillips Bathurst Motley, Westmount, Quebec, circa 1906
By descent to his son, Phillips Carey Motley, Westmount, Quebec, circa 1946
Thence by descent
Condition
Overall in very good condition. This chandelier is being consigned by descendants of the original owners (see detailed provenance in catalogue description) and by all accounts the shade and all of its accompanying bronze hardware have originated together, including the mounting crown, bronze link chain, sockets and paddle switches. The patinated metal ceiling cap which accompanies this chandelier appears to be a later replacement. The shade with approximately 4 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. A few of the glass tiles in the upper leaded geometric register with some minor surface flecks to the exterior, all of which appear stable. The leaded turtleback tiles with no visible cracks. When this chandelier was recently de-installed it had considerable surface soiling and it has since been sensitively cleaned by a professional conservator. When the shade is seen un-illuminated with reflected light, the turtleback tiles which are intensely iridized show a wide range of saturated colors ranging from aqua to magenta to gold. A beautiful example of this rare model.
