Description

  • Tiffany Studios
  • Pair of "Turtleback Tile" Sconces
  • MARKS
  • leaded glass and patinated bronze

Provenance

Acquired from a Cleveland, Ohio Collection, circa 1955 by the present owner

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The sconce shown on the left of the catalogue illustration has a vertical crack running through the center facing turtleback tile. The sconce shown on the right of the catalogue illustration has a short vertical crack on the center facing turtleback tile extending down from the top border approximately 1 inch. Otherwise there are no other visible cracks to the turtleback tiles. Both sconces retain their original hinged bottom doors with inset turtleback tiles and original knobs. The patinated bronze surfaces on both sconces with some light rubbing and surface wear consistent with age and gentle use, and with some occasional small and minor flecks to the patina. Both sconces appear to retain their original sockets as well as the original wall plates and threaded mounting washers. With traces of cream-colored house paint to the perimeter beaded edges of the wall plates and adjacent surfaces from a prior installation. One wall plate with a small 1 inch surface indentation adjacent to the top aperture. With replaced interior mounting hardware (not visible once sconces are installed). The interior of each sconce with surface soiling. A superb example of this rare sconce design displaying exceptional green turtleback tiles with strong iridescence. When un-illuminated and viewed with reflected light, the turtleback tiles display colors ranging from a deep aqua to a cobalt blue. The patinated bronze is darker and richer in tone than shown in the catalogue illustration.
