Catalogue Note
An Italian craftsman, Bossi worked in Dublin from 1785 to 1798 and specialized in scagliola-inlay on white marble ground. At the time he was the most prominent craftsman of his trade and kept his process of scagliola-inlay a closely-guarded secret. He is listed in the Dublin Directories as an `Inlayer in marble and Stucco Worker' at 22 Fleet Street in 1785-86 and at 38 Fleet Street in 1787-98. Although Italian, his Neoclassical designs were mostly influenced by Robert Adam's oeuvre and can be characterized by graceful and delicate forms executed with outmost precision.
