Catalogue Note

The gilt bronze mounts of this lot are identical to the those found on a pair of ormolu-mounted Qianlong vases once owned by Jean de Julienne and now in the Louvre. With their acanthus-covered console feet, heavy laurel swags, openwork Vitruvian scrolls and ribbon-tied fascia, these pieces are typical products of the Goût grec fashion, which was the predecessor of the Louis XVI style in France between 1755 and 1765. The design of these vases was heavily influenced by the drawings of Jean-Charles Delafosse, whose early Neoclassical works can be described by the use animal masks and the abovementioned laurel swags, and an overall architectural character. For more information on the Jean de Julienne's vases, see Daniel Alcouffe et. al., Gilt Bronzes in the Louvre, Dijon, 2004, p.146.
