engine-turned within chased foliage borders simulating binding, the cover mounted with oval gouache miniature of the young King in uniform wearing orders

Literature

This maker's mark appears on a box set with a micromosaic in the GIlbert Collection, identified there as probably Geneva, circa 1810 (Charles Truman, The GIlbert Collection of Gold Boxes, cat. no. 125, pp. 356-57).

Catalogue Note

Giuseppe Rota (1777-1821) was born in Bergamo and studied in Italy, but moved in 1806 to Stockholm.  In 1807 he became a member of the Swedish Academy, and executed mainly miniatures through at least 1815 (Leo R. Schidlof, The Miniature in Europe, vol. II, p. 699).
