of heavy weight and campana form, applied with a collar of running laurel and oak wreathes above military emblems, one side also with applied contemporary arms, the lower body chased with acanthus and honeysuckle, reeded handles rising from satyr masks, the domed cover with seated Victory finial holding shield with the arms of Newcastle

inscription probably removed from one side which now has two dents, skin slightly bright.

Catalogue Note

The arms on the  finial are those of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

The cast and applied arms on the body are those of Ridley, for Sir Matthew White Ridley, 3rd baronet, 1778-1836, M.P. for Newcastle-upon Tyne, who married in 1803, Laura, youngest daughter of George Hawkins. His grandson of the same name was raised to first Viscount Ridley in 1900. The latter held several offices including Secretary of State for the Home Department  1895-1900.
