the serpentine crested upholstered backrest flanked by upholstered straight armrests raised on acanthus-carved downswept armrest supports above an over-upholstered seat raised on acanthus-carved cabriole legs ending in claw and ball feet.

Condition

Overall good condition; brackets possibly later; seat rails with minor old worm, but appear to be stable; legs with usual old scratches, bruises, marks and scuffs.

Catalogue Note

The present chair bears similarities to a number of pieces of Irish furniture including a very similar armchair from Malahide Castle, Co. Dublin, possibly supplied to Charles Pocklington later Domvile, (illustrated in The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven and London: 2007, p. 216, fig. 53).  The pronounced knuckle feet are similar to feet on a bureau cabinet on stand from Bolton Castle, Moon, Co. Kildare, (op. cit., p. 249, fig. 184).
