the trophy realistically cast and chased in the form of a running fox, on twig-strewn base, stamped: 'ELKINGTON & Co'; the inscription includes the badge of 'The King's' Hussars

Condition

Hallmarks and condition good overall, one of the fox's canine teeth is missing; there are also three small holes in the base which suggests that there might have been another or other detachable elements in addition to the twigs.

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: '15th "The King's" Hussars Point to Point Race 14th April 1890. Won by Mr. Harcourt Wood's b.m. Rocket 6 yrs. Owner. Purchased with a legacy bequeathed by the late Captain the Honble. A. Manners, 15th. Hussars for the first Point to Point Race of the Regiment in Ireland.'

The Hon. Arthur Manners was born on 19 July 1855, the second son of John Thomas Manners, 2nd Baron Manners and his wife Lydia Sophia, third daughter of Vice-Admiral William Bateman Dashwood. As a Lieutenant, Arthur Manners had served with the 15th Hussars in the Candahar Column in the Afghan war of 1878/79. He died on 24 August 1888.

Charles Harcourt Gam Wood of Carleton Lodge, Pontefract, Yorkshire, and Caer Beris, Builth Wells, Wales, sometime of the 15th Hussars, was born on 17 August 1866, the eldest son of Captain Charles Arthur Watkins Harcourt Wood by his wife, Maria Louisa, daughter of Benjamin Dixon Eldridge. He was married on 22 January 1898 as her first husband to Emmeline, eldest daughter of Hamon le Strange of Hunstanton Hall, Norfolk. He died at The Gate House Farm, Framfield, Uckfield, Sussex, on 7 August 1925.
