Catalogue Note

In Arts & Crafts style, the lobed almost hemispherical bowl engraved with an inscription below a chased foliate lip applied with twelve enamel Tudor rose bosses, the detachable cover embossed and pierced stylized flowering plants, ivory finial, on hardstone plinth

31cm, 12 14in diameter; 3567gr, 114oz 10dwt of silver all in

 

The inscription reads: 'Presented to A.H. Singleton Esq. by the Members of the Malt Vinegar Brewers Federation, as a token of esteem and regard, and in grateful recognition of distinguished service as Chairman, 1926 to 1931.'

 

The recipient was a solicitor whose practice was established in Victoria Square, Birmingham.

 

Sold with this lot is a small group of papers, the majority dated during the 1920s, relating to a parliamentary Bill 'to define vinegar and liquids made in imitation of vinegar and to regulate the sale thereof,' &c.
