Catalogue Note
The distinctive combination of rich cut-brass decoration and vivid red tortoiseshell, coupled with ebony veneer and gilt-brass mounts, is characteristic of the work of Town and Emanuel, leading London cabinet-makers in the 1830s. Working from premises in New Bond Street, Town and Emanuel attracted commissions from such distinguished patrons as Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV, and the Duke of Sutherland, specialising, as indicated by their trade card, in `Buhl Marquetrie.. of the Finest & most Superb Designs of the Times of Louis 14th, Splendid Cabinets & Tables inlaid...etc.'.
