the central section with a press cupboard enclosing four sliding trays above a lower section of five drawers, each long side cupboard with a hanging rail, stamped GILLOWS LANCASTER

Condition

This is in overall good condition. There is a section of moulding chipped to the right hand side of the centre section. One handle is missing. Another handle is chipped. Typical superb Gillows quality.

Catalogue Note

The pattern for this wardrobe first appears in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book in March 1806 for a client called General Jones (1801-22, p. 1784). An almost identical wardrobe was supplied by Gillows in 1822 to Charles Hubert Pierremont, 2nd Earl Manvers (1778-1860) of Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire (S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, Vol. II, pl. 614) and sold Sotheby's, 31st September 1989, Lot 202.
