Catalogue Note
In 1808 George Smith published his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. The boldly carved monopedia supports used to great effect on the offered lot relate to several of the designs in this compendium. Clearly a flourish adored by Smith, we see it featured on a plate 83 in his design for a sofa table, which also utilises anthemion motifs in relief, again in pl. 87 on a library table, and monopedia also appear as extraordinary supports in plate 44 in his design for an armchair.
