Catalogue Note

The design of these brackets is very similar to an engraving of a one published by John Vardy in Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. Wm. Kent, 1744, p.20. A further closely related design by William Kent for a bracket supporting a bust is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum (cat. no. E.373-1986). Also see a pair sold recently, Chatsworth: The Attic Sale, 5-7 October 2010, Lot 84. There are a number of these rare brackets of varying form in the collection at Chatsworth and at Chiswick House in London.
