  • 55cm. high, 163cm. wide, 44cm.deep; 1ft. 9¾in., 5ft. 4¼in., 1ft. 5¼in.
after a design by George Smith, possibly by Gillows of Lancaster, carved detail to both sides

Condition

Good colour and general condition. Old marks and scratches throughout consistent with age. A very attractive bench. Unusually carved to both sides.

The present bench closely follows a design for a hall bench designed by George Smith, and published originally in his Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer`s Guide of 1826, pl. 17, illustrated in Edward Joy Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, 1977, p.336.
