Catalogue Note
A pencil inscription on the top of the column BOWHILL revealed during restoration would apparently suggest a link between the present piece and Bowhill House, Scotland, a seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch. A dining table known to have been made by George Bullock and purchased it is believed by the 5th Duke of Bucceuch for Bowhill ( illustrated in Hugh Montgomery-Massingberd and Christopher Simon Sykes, Great Houses of Scotland, Singapore, 1997, p.230), shares the same construction and has similar carving to the pedestals, and strongly suggests that the present table was made by the same maker and the inscription suggests that it might have the same provenance.
