Condition

Shell-shaped dishes: both have some losses to the gilding around the rims (the dish with the cherry branch and flowers has more noticeable losses to the gilded rim) and some small losses to the leaves in the gilded inner border. Some fine glaze scratches to both dishes. Sucrier: the stand has been broken at the base of the fixed bowl across one long end. The ground colour restoration has discoloured slightly and there is also restoration to the gilding around the area of the break. The overpainting and break are clearly visible from the underside where the paint has largely flaked off. The rim of the bowl and the stand has a little rubbing to the gilding.

Catalogue Note

According to David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, Vol. II, p. 349 the Bertin service originally had four sucriers et plateaux priced at 110 livres each and  four compotiers coquilles priced at 60 livres each.  As the shell dishes do not have identical gilding to the majority of the Bertin service (instead of flower garlands and palms they have berried laurel branches and palms)  it is not  conclusive that they are two of the original four dishes cited in the records.  However, given their date and very similar decoration they may have been associated with Bertin service at the time.  We know, thanks to Peters, that the important minister Bertin received many pieces separately at around the same time.

The incised mark on the dishes is probably for Baptiste Paris, a répareur working at the factory from 1754-72.  See Rosalind Savill,  The Wallace Collection Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, Vol. III, p. 1092.
