Catalogue Note

Claret ground pieces are a great rarity in the production of the London decorator James Giles.  The mottled character of the ground suggests that this was possibly due to firing difficulties.  A similar coffee cup and saucer, probably from the same service, was illustrated by Gerald Coke, In Search of James Giles (1983), colour plate XIII. Albert Amor exhibited a matching teacup and saucer in their 250th Anniversary Exhibition, April 2001, no. 51, and in the same year they exhibited a teapot with the same decoration in their Autumn Exhibition, no. 39.
