Catalogue Note

The model for these chairs is a set in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg designed by the architect Rusca for the Winter Palace in 1805-1806, covered in St. Petersburg Tapestry. The set is mahogany (originally parcel-gilt but entirely gilded in the 19th century) and is unusual in that the back of each chair is different (see: Russian Furniture in the Collection of the Hermitage, 1973, figs. 115-118).
