An Italian Rococo parcel-gilt and polychrome-lacquered casket probably Venice, mid-18th century

With scattered age and construction cracks, most restored. Partially redecorated. Remounted. Small chips to gesso of finial. Some rubbing and surface dirt to gilding and paint. Some old worm damage to underside, not extensive. Mounts with traces of oxidation and surface dirt. In good condition.

This casket is interesting as it is a fusion of both rococo and neo-classical styles. It demonstrates an exuberance that is typically Venetian in part through it's curvacious bombé form,gaily painted decoration and through the use of gilt on lacquer. It has a luxurious feel - like the costly lacquer being exported form the Far East at that time. The neo-classical details such as the swags and balustrade reference the antique - a new influence spreading across Europe. This piece would have been an extravagant purchase or commission by someone in the upper echelons of Venetian society, an individual or family who was demonstrating their understanding and appreciation of mid 18th century European cutting edge fashion.
