Pile generally good, near original, slightly matted down 1/6th of an inch throughout. Sides with original two cord selvages, flat woven ends folded under and sewn. Ends with slightly lower pile in a few small areas in outer surround. Flexible handle, very good overall condition.

Paule Leleu (1906-1987) was the daughter of the renowned designer Jules Lelue who learned from her father and also worked for Da Silva Bruhns.   From 1932 she was creating original carpet designs and in 1937 she founded her own studio.  Her commissions included a carpet for the Embassy dining room at the 1937 exposition and the dining room carpet for the Elysée palace in 1947.   For the original 1937design of the carpet offered here, please refer to Jacques Sirat-Francoise Sireix, Tapis Français du XXe siècle, Paris, 1993, page 72.
