Description

  • coromandel lacquer
decorated with a continuous scene of ladies and children in fenced rocky gardens and verandahs around a central pavilion filled with musicians, a dancer and a lady seated with attendants, with wutong, pine and willow trees, surrounded by a border of antiques and vases of flowers to the top and sides and emblems and branches at the bottom, the reverse with ten panels of birds and flowers including pheasants, egrets, cockerel amongst magnolia, peony, camelia and prunus trees within a border of birds in branches to the top, antiques and vases to the sides and mythical animals to the bottom

Condition

The screen is generally in reasonably good condition but does have some areas of restoration to some of the panels, such as a 7cm diameter to the centre of the second panel from right, some smaller areas of restoration to the balcony where two ladies are standing to the upper section of the third panel from right, a 40 x 40cm area to the lower section of the fourth panel from right, a repaired vertical split running the whole length of the fifth panel from the right, there are various repaired splits to the other panels except for the first left panel. The reverse of the panels has corresponding repaired splits and there is some general horizontal cracking to the lacquer in various areas to the front and back which is consistent with age.
