Description

  • porcelain painted in underglaze cobalt-blue
painted in varying shades of cobalt-blue depicting 'Seven Sages in the Bamboo Grove', the upper bulb with a reclining scholar presented with a covered vessel by an attendant, the lower bulb with six scholars engaged in literati pursuits within a landscape, encircled by floral and chevron borders at the waist, the neck with a band of stylised tulip flowers

Condition

The double-gourd has overall glaze firing imperfections lower bulb of the has a 5cm x 3.5cm firing depression at the shoulder, near which a burst bubble where colours run forms a 1cm x 0.6cm russet mark. There is also a circular (0.5cm x 0.5cm) chip to the landscape scene on the lower bulb. The vase shows glaze firing imperfections including burst glaze bubbles and iron spots, and some minor surface scratchings.
