A LARGE PAIR OF GLAZED STONEWARE LUOHAN MING DYNASTY

Description

  • pottery
painted in aubergine, ochre and green enamels, each with a bald head with long ear lobes, dressed in long robes, one holding a fly-whisk in his hand, his face with mouth wide opened; the other depicted with his right hand raised with one finger inserted in his right ear and his left hand held to his shoulder

Condition

These impressive figures are in good condition with the exception of the follwoing areas of glaze loss, minor loss and repair: (as illusrated in the catalogue) the Luohan on the right has a 0.4 x 0.2cm chip to his right cheek, a circa 14cm loss to the handle of the fly-whisk held in his right hand and an associated break to the top section of the whish, a 1 x 1cm chip to the back of his right ear lobe, the little finger of his right hand is lost with a clean break, and the tip of his fourth finger on his left hand is chipped, there are several shallow chips and losses (ranging from circa 2cm to 0.5cm) to the figure particularly to his sleeves, restoration to the lower section of the legs and base which has cracked through the front and back and detached from the main body, associated glaze flakes to this area, a 9 x 7cm., area of glaze loss to the lower rear of the aubergine robe. The Luohan on the left has a circa 1.8cm discoloured dark patch along his left eye socket, there is a circa 3.5cm crack running along four of the fingers of his left hand, the right arm has been re-attched, two unglazed areas to the right arm of the figure measuring 4 x 1cm and 3 x 1cm respectively, a 5.5cm., diam., area of glaze loss to the lower back of the aubergine robe, and a 2.2cm., diam area, three circa 7cm., long cracks running vertically along the inner sleeve of the figure's left arm.
