Description

of rectangular form with a foliate cover and base, intricately carved and pierced overall with a dense composition of figures set in a landscape with elaborate buildings and trees, surrounded by flying phoenixes and a toad amid floral sprays, bordered by leafy floral scrolls

Condition

The box has a 0.5 x 0.2cm nick, another 1.8 x 0.2cm nick and a 0.5cm crack at the front edge of the box where the cover closes. There are gaps on the walls of the box where the different ivory panels are attached to one another. The interior of the box has several patches of pale brown coloured stains (the largest measuring circa 5 x 1cm) which is also visible from the outside. The underside of the cover has various horixontal cracks running from the lobed edge, the longest measuring circa 1.5cm. The exterior of the box is much intact with the exception of minor nibbling and losses to the pierced carving, such as a circa 0.2cm loss to a tree twig in the middle of the cover.
