Description

  • porcelain painted with overglaze enamels and gilt
of cylindrical form in three parts, the outer vessel enamelled around the exterior with Eight Immortals and the Queen with female attendants in a fenced garden, divided by two gilt mask handles each suspending a ring, the  faux-bois inner liner with turquoise interior, the cover with the three Star Gods, Fu, Lu and Shou, flanked by attendants with various precious objects, all surmounted with a gilt Buddhist lion finial, the turquoise-glazed base inscribed with a six-character Jiaqing seal mark in iron-red

Provenance

Collection of John Reeves, FRS (1774-1856). John Reeves was born in Essex and joined the East India Company as a tea broker and went to China in 1812, where he subsequently became Chief Inspector of tea.

Condition

The warming vessel is in general good condition with the exception of minor rubbing to gilding and painted enamels and a 0.2cm scratch on the recessed foot of the outer container. There are other glaze firing imperfections such as iron spots and bust glaze bubbles.
