Description

finely cast standing on a lotus pedestal with hands clasped in anjalimudra before his chest, the face in calm serenity with downcast eyes and long ear lobes, dressed in elaborate long robes hemmed with intricate floral borders, the outer garment embellished with flower heads enclosed within similar floral bands

Condition

The luohan is in good overall condition with the exception of rubbing to the gilding on the extremities (predominantly to the face and right side of the robe), a circa 3cm diam depressed area to the back and shoulders, nibbles to the edges of the base, the base has been removed, traces of oxidation as green verdigris along the floral borders of the figure's robe and two ungilded rectangular (1.9cm x 0.7cm and 0.3cm x 0.5cm respectively) areas to the back and shoulders which are probably original to the casting.

Catalogue Note

It is rare to find bronze figures wearing robes of this type; compare a smaller figure with a similar floral robe from the Desmond Gure and Arthur M. Sackler collections, sold at Christie's New York, 1st December 1994, lot 72. Further related examples with embellished robes include a slightly smaller figure sold in these rooms, 14th October 1975, lot 237; another of this size sold at Christie's London, 16th December 1981, lot 291; and a larger figure with incised robes sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28th April 1996, lot 573.
