Description
- rhinoceros horn
of flaring U-shape with lobed sides raised on a slightly spreading foot, carved in shallow relief around the exterior with a band featuring pairs of interlinked circular discs framed by four ruyi heads at the top, the flat strap handle flanked by two chilong clambering up the side of the cup into the interior, the base encircled with a keyfret border, the horn of rich toffee tone darkening at the base
Condition
The cup has a triangular 3.5 x 0.5cm chip to the rim, another two areas (1.2 x 0.5cm and 2.3 x 1cm) of loss from one of the chilongs at the handle, and a 0.6 x 0.5cm flake to the exterior near the spout of the cup. There are also minor nibbling along the other side of the rim and natural veining with associated flakes especially to the base of the cup. Two recessed bumps, measuring circa 0.7 x 0.7cm and 0.4 x 0.4cm respectively, as a result of natural property of the horn are visible at the side of the cup just above two interlinked discs (as seen from the catalogue illustration). The horn is of a brighter golden tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
