Catalogue Note
James Cox (1723-1800) of London was one of the most famous clock and toy makers of his time. His much-prized mechanical wonders were made for export to China, Russia, India and the Ottoman empire where they were highly demanded as they represented wealth and status. Cox's models of the rhinoceros appears to have been inspired by the famous woodcut print by German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), commonly known as Durer's Rhinoceros (1515) which also depicts the animal's body covered in armour-like sheets.
