Description

  • jade
of rectangular section with angled shoulders rising from a spreading foot to a waisted neck flanked by two dragon handles, the body and neck with angular flanges running up the sides and edges of the vase, carved on each face in low relief with archaistic taotie masks below upright cicada lappets, the stepped cover carved with pendent cicada lappets and surmounted with a rectangular knob, the stone of deep olive tone mottled with darker inclusions

Condition

The hu vase is in good condition with the exception of a 1 x 1cm re-polished chip to one of the corners at the base, natural veining of the stone including a circa 16cm vein running diagonally across one of the dragon handles to one side, and several other vertical veins (circa 13cm) along the other sides of the vase, and minor nicks to the carving as a result of natural property of the stone. The stone is in a brigher olive green tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
