each intricately carved with a scene of figures set in elaborate interiors possibly taken from Romance of the West Chamber, one with a male figure secretly watching two ladies engaged in a game of weiqi through the fenced walls with a distant crouching figure, the other with a seated lady engaged in a conversation with three male figures on a balcony framed by jagged rocks

Condition

The panel with two ladies playing weiqi has a circa 0.2 x 0.2cm loss to one of the tips of the plantain leaves overhanging from the top, minor nibbling to the edges of the carving and two uneven recessed areas (circa 1 x 1cm) to the walls of the building structure to the left due to natural veining and knots of the wood. The left border of the panel has a circa 0.6cm hairline across the sides and a circa 3.5cm crack running diagonally along the upper left corner. The other panel has a circa 1 x 0.5cm area of loss at the top squared scrolls just under the canopy in the middle and another 0.9 x 0.2cm loss along the right border of the panel. There is a circa 3cm crack running across the left border of the panel into the lower branch of the small gree bush, and another circa 1cm brak on the rocky face near it. Other minor nicks are visible on the building to the right of the panel with the largest measuring circa 0.5cm. The other panel
