Description
- stoneware
shaped in the form of a rocky grotto pierced and moulded with numerous apertures, recesses and crags, some with seated sages, their faces unglazed and burnt brown in the firing, and two with square two-storied pagodas, covered overall with a thick and bubbled celadon glaze thinning to a cream colour at the extremities, the base left unglazed revealing the brown body

Condition
One figure, seated atop at the highest point of the grotto completely restored and re-painted. Otherwise, the model is in good condition with the exception of minor chips (the largest measuring circa 0.6 x 0.6cm) and nicks to the extremities, areas of glaze flake (such as that in a 5cm area found on seated scholar at the top rocky ledge), other glaze firing imperfections such as iron spots, burst glaze bubbles and firing cracks (the longest measuring circa 6cm), and a crack to the body which pierced through one side of the base.
