the U-shaped cup rising from a straight foot to a flaring rim, painted to the exterior in bright copper-red tones with five phoenix roundels and a further one in the centre, the stylised bird with its wings out-stretched and head turned, inscribed to the base with a six-character Kangxi mark within a double circle

Condition

In excellent condition; a very small firing flaw to the foot and two minute imperfections to the rim.

 A closely related cup was included in the Special Exhibition of K'ang-hsi, Yung-cheng and Ch'ien-lung Porcelain Ware from the Ch'ing Dynasty in the National Palace Museum, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1986, cat. no. 7; one is published in Kangxi Porcelain Wares from the Shanghai Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1988, pl. 75; another from the Edward T. Chow and T.Y Chao collections was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 25th November 1980, lot 113, and 19th May 1987, lot 265; and a third cup from the Edward T. Chow and Hall Family collections was also sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 2nd May 2000, lot 524.
