Description

  • canton enamel
of barrel form modelled with four open-work panels supporting shaped cartouches, each delicately enamelled with elegant ladies and boys within gardens and open pavilions, framed by ruyi-shaped panels enamelled with bats, the sides painted with an elaborate composite floral scroll and chilong medallions, all against a yellow-enamelled ground, with archaistic chilong borders at the foot and rim, the slightly domed cover similarly enamelled and centred by a large lotus floret framed by feathery leaves

Provenance

Collection of the Hon. Mrs Nellie Ionides.

Ionides Familly Collection.

Condition

Large and severe losses to the enamels around the sides and to the top of the garden seat, revealing the copper body beneath. The losses most significant to the figurative panels to the sides with the enamels to only one panel more or less retained, leaving 3 with large sections of losses. Associated traces of paint, dents and cracks to the enamels throughout. Would greatly benefit from sympathetic restoration.
