  • Coromandel Lacquer
the central field on one side carved and polychromed to depict an elaborate landscape of a Daoist Paradise, illustrating mountainous peaks and waves occupied by numerous groups of male and female Immortals variously holding auspicious objects and flowers, gathering to greet Shoulao and Xiwangmu, framed by a border of auspicious objects above, with dragons emerging from clouds to the sides, and mythical beasts along the bottom, and all enclosed by a border of stylised character roundels, the reverse carved with lengthy inscriptions and Kangxi cyclical date, framed by bird and flower panels and auspicious objects

Condition

Each of the 12 panels with significant losses and flaking to the lacquer, with some long vertical cracks and visible traces of over-painting to areas of the lacquer. Approximately 26 areas of the lacquer with significant flaking and stabilised with restoration tape. Some further damage to the hinges and losses to lacquer to the feet, as visible in catalogue image. Further detailed images of condition available on request.
