A CIRCULAR WHITE JADE PLAQUE QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY

carved to the front face with five bearded sages within a landscape with pine, wutong and bamboo, two beside the river and the other three standing in a raised fenced garden admiring a crane hovering above, the reverse inscribed with four characters reading yaotai wuqu ('savouring in the land of immortals') bordered by five bats amidst scrolling clouds, mounted on a wood base as a table screen, together with a wood ruyi sceptre inlaid with three oval jade plaques carved in low relief with the sanduo (The Three Abundances) including peach, Buddhist finger citron and pomegranate

Condition

The jade plaque has a natural flaw to the bottom corner and various natural nicks and veining with associated flakes, the stone is of a slightly more yellowish tone than the catalogue illustration. There are small chips along the wood frame to which the jade is attached to the wood. The seams to which separate wood panels are joined is visible with occasional gaps. The wood stand has been repaired leaving traces of glue in various places. Two extensions are now missing, leaving pierced apertures and traces of glue for attachment. The ruyi sceptre is in good condition with the exception of four circular natural nicks (each measuring circa 0.2x0.2cm) to the jade panel decorated with peach and scratches to the underside of the wood base (measuring circa 1cm). The jades are of a slightly more celadon tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
