Estimate
40,000 - 60,000 GBP
bidding is closed
Description
- Gilt bronze and jade
of square section with canted corners, the gilt-bronze framework inset with reticulated jade panels decorated with a shou character roundel enclosing a bat surrounded by four further bats against a ground of scrolling lotus vines, similarly decorated at the angled shoulders, flaring neck and base with jade panels enclosing leafy lotus scrolls, fitted for an electrical cord
Condition
The lantern had been altered and fitted with modern electric cord and a switch. There is a 0.2 x 0.2cm bump at the flaring sides on the top of the lantern which could be a flaw in the casting. The flaring sides are incised with an arrow-shaped mark measuring circa 1.5cm long and two diagonal lines each measuring 1cm long. There are other light scratchings (the longest 3.3cm), slightly uneven surface and loss to the gilt surface particularly to the extremities. The turquoise-inlay might have been lost in places which have now been refilled. One jade panel at the side and another at the top is cracked, but is held in place by the gilt-bronze framework, there are general nibbling and minute chips to the carving. The jades are of a slightly more celadon tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
