Description

the straight sides tapering to a domed top supported by a curved stepped foot, the exterior cast with a four-line inscription reading Guangxu jiashen nian liyue shiyi ri dan ('morning of the 11th day of the 6th month of jiashen year in Guangxu's reign', corresponding to 1884), Jiutian Niangniang ('Queen of the Nine Heavens'), Xuantan Yuanshuai ('Marshal of the Xuan Altar') and xinshi Li Yijiang jingfeng ('respectfully presented by the faithful follower Li Yijiang'), all framed top and bottom with horizontal bands of foliate scrolls divided by diagonal borders, the domed top surmounted by a lobed loop handle, the bronze with areas of light malachite patina

Condition

With a small aperture beneath the handle, measuring approximately 7mm by 6mm, as visible in the catalogue image, with associated crack, measuring approximately 18mm to the left and 6mm to the left. A large star crack directly below, measuring a maximum of 54mm. Otherwise the bell in good general condition, with extensive verdigris all over with general surface wear.
