Half-title with portrait of the title character on verso, photograph of bust of Clemens by Karl Gerhardt with the authors signature reproduced below and the imprint "Heliotype Printing Co." but tablecloth not visible; some light marginal spotting and soiling. Publisher's green cloth with gilt and black stamped pictorial title on upper cover and on spine, peach end leaves and pastedowns, in a green leatherette drop-box; extremities rubbed, tears in head and foot of spine. With a calling card signed "Mark Twain" along with the addressed and stamped envelope in which it was received laid in.

First American edition, with the points: title leaf a cancel and copyright notice dated 1884, illustration captioned "Him and another Man" is listed (on page 13) as at page 88, page 57 up ll lines reads "... with the was ..."; page 283 is a cancel with a straight pant fly in the illustration, the final "5" in the pagination for "155" is larger than the other numbers.
