Catalogue Note

First edition, first state signed both as Clemens and as Twain, "S. L. Clemens / Mark Twain" on front blank. Page 441 has the flaming urn and head of Clemens depicted that was removed in later editions at  Livy's request. Page 443 is captioned "The St. Charles Hotel."  but BAL gives this no priority over the "St. Louis" caption.

A lovely copy. Unknown to many collectors is that Huck Finn makes a lengthy cameo on pages 42-61, a story within the chapter detailing  Huck and Jim's attempt to reach Cairo that doesn't appear in Huckleberry Finn (published two years later).
